Composting is still relatively in its infancy in terms of how much organic waste is still going to landfills all across New Zealand. As we move towards a circular economy and a zero waste economy people skilled and knowledgeable about composting will highly sort after.
The NZ Box system and methodology allows schools to not only compost their own organic waste and that of their community, it produces the highest quality of compost to feed the surrounding soils, and provides students with the opportunity to be hands on with the process of making compost. From the collecting and sorting of waste, to controlling the balance of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and water, to the maturing of the compost students will learn it all.
To grow nutrient healthy food in a community a regular supply of high quality compost is required.
The New Zealand Box design and methodology has been proven to service the weekly food waste collected from approximately 120 households using a 6 bin site. (See above picture)
With the ability to easily reach temperatures above 60ºC this system can accept all certified compostable packaging, including Poly Lactic Acid (PLA).
With their elegant and rat proof design, and the ability to eliminate smells these bins allow sites to be set up in residential areas and public parks with no complaints.
The evidence showing the positive impacts of gardening on mental and physical health in the workplace is irrefutable. A vegetable, herb or flower garden can help build a sense of community and collaboration, can provide employees with a place to be mindful or meditative, and an opportunity to connect with the natural world.
This connection with the natural world has been proven to enhance creativity, innovation, engagement and productivity. Further to this, in today's employment environment a business with a proactive and positive culture towards social and environmental practices will find itself better able to recruit and retain high quality candidates.
Having a functioning on site compost bin will also engage employees in the production and reduction of waste helping to improve a businesses sustainability performance.
How about a hot compost bin in your own garden? With their outdoor furniture appearance and rat proofing, never before has at home hot composting been so easy and attractive to do at home.
The capacity of these bins will allow you to not only compost your own food and garden waste, but also that of your neighbours and community.
With the ability to create a hot compost at home you will be capable of composting meat, dairy, bones and certified compostable packaging.
Why pay for the collection of food scraps created by the residents in your apartment building or complex when instead you could create your own compost? This compost could then be supplied back to the residents to feed their pot plants, herb gardens, and micro-gardens. Or grow an on-site food garden that connects and feeds the residents.
With the design being free standing and easy to construct and disassemble there is now a fantastic opportunity for event organisers to compost all food scraps and compostable packaging generated by their event. The resulting compost can then be offered back to the landowners or surrounding community, and the bins removed after the compost has been generated.
